video
Below are a group of experimental shorts using both original and found footage. Sound, rather than language, is coupled with imagery to present cinematic events in a more abstract and primal manner.
togetherness
Togetherness was made using found footage of an educational film on the subject of divorce. The film was scratched and abraided to create a layer of imagery over the original. This was done to illustrate the underlying psychological forces flowing between mother and daughter. Dialog was replaced with an electronic soundtrack to further push the deeper, wordless emotions that lie beneath.
objects at rest and in motion
Shot on super 8, this film explores the pervasiveness of radio and television towers in our environment. They are steeples of technology, symbolic of media influence, radiating their invisible messages in every direction. Standing steady and still, they were made active by a constantly moving camera.
videofeed 1
VideoFeed 1 was constructed of glitch artifacts that occurred during an analog to digital film transfer. The soundtrack was made by exposing the movie to a light controlled oscillator. As patterns flicker, the oscillator's pitch responds to overall brightness. VideoFeed 1 and the following two films are informed by structural/materialist film theories of the 60s and 70s which reject narrative content and cinematic space. Instead, emphasis is placed on process, production and the flattening of space. The aesthetic push is towards error, accident, and defect.
particle chamber
This film was made without use of a camera or the capturing of light. Blank film stock was treated to multiples processes including spray paint, solvents, water, salt, etc. Once projected the various patterns and textures, frozen and fixed, become animated. Soundtrack is a selection from Steve Reich's "Pulse".
videoFeed 2
Cameraless film made using a circuit bent VideoPainter. The altered circuitry produced abstract, geometric patterns that were captured, edited and coupled with an electronic soundtrack
